Google Earth for Scientific Regional Analysis short course with Scott Madry

An area of the Burgundy region of France was surveyed using Google Earth and a surprisingly large number of previously recorded and new archaeological sites were located. This short course describes the capabilities and limitations of Google Earth for regional archaeological survey and site location, and for general feature identification. The system has significant benefits for this work, but also has limitations that could be addressed to make the tool even more useful. Following a short presentation of the research results, there will be hands-on exercises using Google Earth and ArcGIS software. Participants will analyze an area and create "placemarks" to share with others and see how to incorporte GIS data. Did you know that you can overlay images in Google Earth? Did you know that you can export shapefiles so that they can be viewed in Google Earth? These exercises will show you how.

Interests

I am interested in the applications of GEOMATICS-the functional integration of remote sensing, geographic information systems, global positioning systems, Photogrammetry and aerial photography, informatics, visualization, and related technologies to study the interaction of human cultures and the environment. I have conducted research for over 20 years in Burgundy, France. Please see my award winning French research website.

I have also worked with Robert Lozar of USA/CERL through a Cooperative Research and Development Agreement (CRDA) to publicly distribute data generated by his Global GIS Research. The product is the highly popular GLOBAL GRASS/Arc CD-ROM series. which is the largest global-scale GIS database in the world.

I am interested in patterns of setlement and land-use, and applications of these technologies in the developing world. I am active in International Space activities, including working with the U.N., and others in outer space applications. I apply these techniques to a variety of disciplines, including global studies and archaeological applications.

Currently I am developing a series of archaeological predictive models for the entire state of North Carolina for the NCDOT (through ESI, Inc.) and for several counties in Florida. These projects use GIS, GPS, remote sensing, spatial statistics and related tools.

Another active project is my GIS and remote sensing work with endangered Mountain Gorillas in Africa in association with the Dian Fossey Gorilla Fund International

I was very honored to receive the prestegious Russian Konstantin E. Tsiolkovsky Gold Medal in 1997, in recognition of my contribution to International Education, and improving broader knowledge of the great works of the Russian visionary Tsiolkovsky. I have created a WWWeb page of the Tsiolkovsky museum in Kaluga, Russia, which is dedicated to this visionary Space pioneer. Visit the site, he was a very fascinating person. Even better, try to visit the museum in Kaluga, it is well worth a visit!
