- Google Earth for Scientific Regional Analysis short course with Scott Madry
An area of the Burgundy region of France was surveyed using Google Earth and a surprisingly large number of previously recorded and new archaeological sites were located. This short course describes the capabilities and limitations of Google Earth for regional archaeological survey and site location, and for general feature identification. The system has significant benefits for this work, but also has limitations that could be addressed to make the tool even more useful. Following a short presentation of the research results, there will be hands-on exercises using Google Earth and ArcGIS software. Participants will analyze an area and create "placemarks" to share with others and see how to incorporte GIS data. Did you know that you can overlay images in Google Earth? Did you know that you can export shapefiles so that they can be viewed in Google Earth? These exercises will show you how.
