Mountain Gorilla Protection: A Geomatics Approach

"Gorillas in the data base"

National Geographic Society Exhibit

The National Geographic Society has long been involved in supporting research in the Virungas. In December of 2001 it included a 3-D model of the Virungas in their new permanent Exhibit in Explorer's Hall, the museum at the National Geographic Society's headquarters in Washington, D.C.
The new exhibit contains 16 large, three dimensional landscape representations. These consist of satellite imagery overlaid on Digital Elevation Models (DEM).  The displays are created by Solid Terrain Modeling, Inc. of Filmore, California.

The Virunga exhibit shown below is of a Landsat Thematic Mapper (TM) image of the region overlaid on the DEM produced for our project. Some clouds are evident on the southwest area of the park.

This is the only example of Africa in the exhibit.
