Vertical Aerial Photography and Analysis

 

Because of the unstable political and military situation in the region, aerial photography of the region is considered to be national security information, and is not released. No aerial photos of Congo are available at all, and there is very limited access to other data in Rwanda and Uganda.

We did acquire copies of some 1950's aerials of the Rwanda portion of the park.

The above graphic shows the level of detail of the 1:100,000 topographic map from 1936 and 1950's aerial photos.


Vegetation Map

In 1995, Virunga researcher Dr. McNeilage came to Rutgers University and conducted manual vegetation community mapping using the Belgian maps and our vertical aerial photos. The result of this work is shown below. This was used in the later analysis of the satellite imagery.
