La Pierre de la Wivre, or the Stone of the Wivre, is a large volcanic rock outcrop some 500 yards from the Porte du Rebout, sitting on a great promontory with a superb view. Legend says that it was here that Vercengetorix was named the leader of all the Gauls in their revolt against Rome, but this is unproven.
A Wivre is a traditional mythical creature in Burgundy, part woman and part serpent, who wore a great jewel on her brow and hoarded a treasure of jewels and riches...perhaps a distant memory of the vast mineral riches of the Morvan region, where Mont Beuvray reigns as one of the highest ridges.
