Le Parc aux Chevaux

The Parc aux Chevaux contains a vast Gallo-Roman villa complex. The main house (3,800 sq. meters or over 11,000 sq. feet) was excavated in 1868 and contains a typical Italian Roman villa design with an atrium, peristyle, garden, bedrooms, central hypocoste heating system, and baths. Modern excavations conducted in 1988 and 1998 show that this structure sits on top of an earlier wooden structure of typical Celtic design. Near the northeast corner is a water spring and basin, which channeled water into an aqueduct, providing running water for the house from a public basin.

You can see the large public water basin in the foreground, running along the wall of the villa. The water channel runs off to the left towards the water source. You can see large piles of dirt, earth moving equipment, and tents that are used in the excavation work.
