Hôtel des Gaules

The small structure in the foreground, known as the Hôtel des Gaules, is a reconstruction (2001) of the small residence of Jacques-Gabriel Bulliot, who lived alone here for 35 years while he conducted his archaeological research at Bibracte. His house was next to one of the several ancient permanent water sources on the mountain.

The house contains a small exhibit of his life and excavations on the site in the 1800s. The name is a joking reference to the grand monument "Autel des Gaules" (Altar of the Gauls), which was erected by the Roman Emperor Augustus in Lyon. In the background is a large Gallo-Roman villa complex.

The remainder of the image is typical of the summit of Bibracte; covered in forest, cool, mysterious, and beautiful.
