La Chaume (thatch in English) is a vast open space located at one of the highest locations on Mont Beuvray. It is crossed by one of the main ancient roads that exits the hill fort at one of the major city gates nearby. La Chaume was the location of a major Medieval fair that was held on the first Wednesday of each May up until 1914. A vast panorama of the Arroux River valley can be seen from the edge of mountain here, where an orientation table points out the various locations below. On a very clear day, if you look east, you can see Mont Blanc in the Alps.
This image shows the monument to Jacques-Gabriel Bulliot (1817-1902), whose solitary years of work proved that Mont Beuvray was indeed the ancient Bibracte, capital of the Aedui.
