Autun

Autun was the Roman city of Augustodunum Aedorum, some 22 km east of Bibracte. It was here that the population of Bibracte was encouraged by the Romans to relocate after their conquest of Gaul. Augustodunum became a major city in the empire, with a large university and the largest theatre in Gaul, the fourth largest of all known Roman theatres. Autun is a lovely city today, with major sections of the Roman walls and two of its entry gates still standing. The theatre is also extant. The beautiful Cathedral St. Lazar and Rolin Museum are well worth a visit.
